The Amiable Child Monument

This odd monument stands just northwest of Grant's Tomb on the far side of Riverside Drive and down some steps. Its inscription reads, "Erected to the memory of an amiable child, St. Clair Pollock." He was a five-year-old who fell to his death from the surrounding rocks in 1797, and when his family's farm was sold, his uncle requested that the child's grave remain untouched. For over 200 years, it miraculously has, serving as a physical reminder that this whole area really was once farm country. Click here for an image of what it looked like in 1900 or so.
