125th St. Subway Viaduct (c. 1900)

Although strictly speaking this is a little to the north of our neighborhood, this photograph still gives an idea how undeveloped the area was just after the subway opened in 1904. There are few people about and trees line vacant lots on 125th St. There are trolley tracks in the foreground and a trolley is visible under the bridge. Fragments of these tracks are still visible today under the 125th St. viaduct of Riverside Drive, which was not yet built when this picture was taken. Coca-Cola remains a constant, but the apartment building just beyond the bridge on the right side has since been torn down in favor of a one-story fast food outlet. Here is a photo of it under construction.
