The West 111th St. Community Garden

The West 111th St. Community Garden, located at Amsterdam Ave, is a Green Thumb Garden, a city program that allows vacant lots to be used for community gardening purposes. The building that formerly occupied this site was torn down more than 20 years ago to make way for new construction. The new building was to have been a curious multi-tubular structure. Occupation of the building just to the north by squatters halted these plans. For many years, the lot was known as "rat park" to undergraduates at Columbia. With much hard work, it has been turned into a beautiful oasis. There is currently some troubling litigation going on about this tiny plot. But if interested in joining the garden or just doing some gardening, please call John Arbo at 865-0497 or e-mail him at jca10@columbia.edu.
