As you can see, there was not a lot in Morningside Heights before the university moved here in 1897. Fifteen years later, thanks to the coming of the subway, this was all highly urbanized. This view looks south-east from a point above the Hudson; the center of the picture is now roughly 120th St. and Broadway. The steamboat pier vanished long ago.
