Vanished: Subway Entrance

These subway entrances used to make the experience of disappearing into a hole in the ground to go somewhere just a little bit more civilized. And on the way out, they gave pedestrians a chance to open an umbrella and helped their eyes adjust from darkness to light. This one was actually at 106th St., but it is similar to what was at 110th & Broadway. The 116th St. station never had them, because it used to have a whole building, now also vanished, to enter in the middle of Broadway. Sic gloria mass transit.
