Construction of the IRT Subway

The IRT 1,2,3,9 train under Broadway is our neighborhood's lifeblood. The cut and cover method of construction is illustrated clearly in this photo of the 116 St. station taken almost seven months before the opening. William Barclay Parsons, the IRT's Chief Engineer, was a graduate of Columbia, so he made sure his alma mater's station was impressive and to this day it is adorned with terra-cota Columbia heraldry.
